There is nothing better than that fresh-from-the-salon glow. Your color looks rich, shiny, and perfectly toned. But what you do after your appointment can either protect that investment or fade it fast. The first two weeks after coloring are critical.
If you want your color to stay vibrant and your hair to stay healthy, avoid these seven common mistakes.
1. Don’t Wash It Too Soon
Give your hair at least 48 hours before washing. This allows the cuticle to fully close and helps lock in the color. Washing too early can cause fading, especially with reds, brunettes, and freshly toned blondes.
When you do wash, use lukewarm water. Hot water opens the cuticle and lets color slip right out.
2. Don’t Use Harsh Shampoos
Not all shampoos are color-safe. Sulfate-heavy formulas can strip your new shade and dry out your hair. Switch to a shampoo designed for color-treated hair. It makes a noticeable difference in how long your color lasts.
If you are blonde, use purple shampoo only once or twice a week to prevent brassiness. Overusing it can make your hair look dull.

3. Don’t Skip Conditioner
Color-treated hair needs moisture. Lightening services, especially highlights or balayage, can leave hair more porous. Conditioner helps smooth the cuticle and restore softness.
Focus conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends. Those areas are the most processed and the most vulnerable.
4. Don’t Overdo Heat Styling
Flat irons and curling wands can fade color and cause breakage. Always apply a heat protectant before styling. Lower the temperature on your tools. Most people use more heat than necessary.
Try mixing in heatless styles during the week. Loose braids, buns, and natural waves give your hair a break.

5. Don’t Swim Without Protection
Chlorine and salt water are not your color’s best friend. They can cause dryness, fading, and even green tones in blonde hair.
Before swimming, wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner. This creates a barrier and reduces how much pool or ocean water your hair absorbs.
6. Don’t Ignore the Sun
UV rays can fade and dull your color, especially lighter shades. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, wear a hat or use a UV-protectant hair spray. Sun protection is not just for your skin.

7. Don’t Skip Follow-Up Appointments
Glosses and toners help refresh shine and adjust tone between full color services. Waiting too long between appointments can lead to uneven fading or dryness.
Regular trims are also important. Healthy ends make your color look polished and intentional.
Coloring your hair is an investment in your look. A little extra care goes a long way. When you protect your color properly, it stays brighter, shinier, and healthier for weeks to come.
